Phase Biolabs is a UK-based biotech startup founded in 2020 by Dr David Ortega.
The company is commercialising carbon recycling / upcycling technology to reduce and revalorise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from heavy industry.
Phase makes cost-competitive chemicals and electro-fuels from carbon dioxide (CO2) using fermentation, a process that leverages Phase’s proprietary and engineered microorganisms. The company has been awarded several public funding grants including a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) award in 2020 and an Innovate UK Smart Grant in 2022.
Phase collaborates with and is currently based at the Synthetic Biology Research Centre (SBRC) at the University of Nottingham. Phase is an alumni of Y Combinator (W22) and is supported by leading climate investors from the EU and US.
In June 2022, Phase secured support from Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Foundation through the Fellowship program to develop their technology to produce electro-fuels
