ReNew ELP have developed Hydro-PRT®, a unique advanced plastic recycling technology that utilises supercritical water (water under elevated pressure and temperature, above its critical point) to convert post-consumer, end-of-life, multi-layered flexible and rigid mixed plastic waste streams into circular hydrocarbons, which can be used in the manufacture of virgin-grade plastics. This circular approach is complementary to traditional mechanical recycling processes, reducing plastics being sent to incineration or landfill and supporting the elimination of exported plastic waste. The world’s first Hydro-PRT site is at Wilton International, in Teesside, UK and is in the final stages of commissioning - set to commence operations in late 2024. This site has the capacity to produce 20kpa of recycled liquid hydrocarbon products, with the scope to expand production capacity to over three times this initial size. Through Hydro-PRT, there is no limit to the number of times the same material can be recycled – meaning this technology has the potential to significantly reduce the use of single-use plastics and permanently increase material circularity in the plastics industry.
