I have done the Careers Speed Dating a few times it is good fun but more important it is a great opportunity to talk to the pupils about the great opportunities science and engineering offer. John tells me these events are very popular in schools but he is always after volunteers.

1) Careers Speed Dating
Volunteers will be questioned about their jobs by small groups of Year 9 (13 to 14 years old) students, in a sequence of 7-minute “speed dates”. No prep required; the students are provided with suggested questions.
The morning session runs from 08:55 to 12:25
The afternoon session runs from 13:05 to 14:40
Lunch will be provided.
If you are participating all day, or the morning sessions only, please report to Main Reception between 08:15 and 08:30;
If you are attending for the afternoon sessions only, please report to Main Reception between 12:30 and 12:45.
2) Practice Interviews
Volunteers will be interviewing students from Year 10 (14-15 years old), one-to-one, as if they had applied for a job. We’ll provide some generic employability questions (on time-keeping, appearance, attitude, etc;), as well as a feedback form. Arrival from 08:30, please; the event is from 09:15 to 12:35 (with a break part way through).
3) CV Builder
Each volunteer will be a “mentor” to a table of 4 students, offering advice as we lead them through the compilation of a CV. The students are Year 11, so 16 years old.
Morning Session – Arrival between 08:30 and 09:00, session is from 09:15 to 12:35, with a break part-way through.
Afternoon Session – Arrival between 12:45 and 13:15, session is from 13:35 to 15:35.

4) Careers Lab

Sessions will run from 08:55 to 12:10
Each session will be in a classroom, led by a teacher; volunteers will have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the class, then help the students with careers-related tasks, as set by their teacher; for example, “who is a good role model?”, “what motivates you to go to work?”, “what do employers look for?”
Students are Year 10, so 14-15 years old.
