With funding from the UK Space Agency and Cornwall Council, Virgin Orbit is now developing a UK supply chain for a Transportable Ground Operating System (TGOS) for their LauncherOne rocket that is going to revolutionise the launch capability of small satellites.
TGOS is effectively a movable ground support system, consisting of a series of containers that will manage propellant and distribute these commodities at the correct pressures and temperatures to their LauncherOne vehicle at the UK Spaceport in Newquay, Cornwall.
In this first instance, Virgin Orbit are looking for a supplier to prime the build, integration and test of the TGOS, however some of the capabilities that are needed are:
Mechanical, Pneumatic, Hydraulic System Component Fabrication & Assembly, including: Tube and pipe bending and rolling fabrication, Precision cleaning, Tube welding and brazing, Expertise in making all types of low and medium pressure connections, Instrumentation skills – crimping, soldering, grounding, shielding and checkouts, Cleaning for LOx systems
Instrumentation and Control Systems, including: Sensor selection and installation, Sensor troubleshooting, Junction box installation/wiring, Instrumentation harness construction, Class I Div 2/Zone 2 electrical installation practices, Experience with instrumentation power systems (24V DC supply and UPS), Experience with NI cDAQ data acquisition platform
Testing during build process, Leak testing under pressure, Pneumatic and hydraulic proof testing, Weld inspection, Cleanliness Inspection (Non Volatile Residue and Particles), Component Vibration testing, Temperature cycling. Activation testing, Cryogenic shock testing, Leak Testing under pressure, Checkout operation of individual subsystems.
Phil Kinsey from KISPE Space who are supporting Virgin Orbit to develop this supply chain will be presenting this opportunity.
