The area was classified as Zone 21.
Thorne & Derrick were contacted by electrical design consultant who had been employed by UK university tasked with finding a suitable ATEX light that offered the client high performance, durability and lower investment and installation costs.
Following a DSEAR inspection, the university had been advised that they needed to separate their wood pellet storage area from their biomass plantroom due to potential risk of explosion.
A design to separate the areas was quickly prepared and T&D were asked to provide a lighting design for the newly segregated storage room by the electrical design consultant. The area was classified as Zone 21.
The Solution
Thorne & Derrick prepared the design using the widely anticipated new Raytec SPARTAN Generation II Linear LED fittings. Offering an improved lumen output, a similar LUX level was achieved without using the traditional high bay fittings.
The cost comparison between the number of highbays and linear fittings was only negligible but the operating costs were almost half due the improved energy efficiency of the new Generation II fittings.
Using latest software our FREE Lighting Design Service supports the upgrade from fluorescent to LED lighting focussed on maximised light output, optimised energy consumption with reliable and safe certification for explosion protection concepts in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous area zones and workplaces.
The above design was complete in less than a week and the light fittings are now being manufactured ready for dispatch later this year.
