The challenges relating to work experience are well documented and highlighted in a new report from Engineering UK, which focuses on the urgent need to address STEM careers provision. In it, the report recognises the value of these virtual experiences, especially for young people in rural locations that may be far-removed from any STEM industries. It also recognises how valuable these platforms are as a precursor for real-time work experience by allowing young people to get a real sense of the industry they are interested in.
In IChemE’s virtual work experience platform, participants will explore common misconceptions, take part in quizzes and activities, and have the opportunity to chat to practising engineers via the Ambassador platform. In addition, they will be able to try a real-world task through a mini project known as a ‘sprint’, which has been specially created by a working process engineer in the energy sector.
IChemE has partnered with Springpod to create the platform, which has been hugely supported by IChemE members from a variety of sectors. They have helped develop the content, with over 50 engineers submitting case studies or videos, being filmed for webinars, or taking part as Ambassadors. Both the virtual work experience programme and the sprint are aimed at school and college students aged 14 to 18.
Jo Cox, Head of Young People’s & Student Engagement, IChemE, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get to explore the breadth of careers in different industries in chemical and process engineering. As well as engaging in virtual work experience, young people can also use this platform to try their hand at a real-world task.”
