Read more >The year 2021 marks the 130th anniversary of Babcock – a landmark achievement that few companies achieve. This is also a very unique year where the world continues to face an unprecedented global health crisis. While it may not necessarily be a time for celebration, it is still important for us to reflect on the past, and more importantly, to focus on the future.
It is particularly gratifying to be recognising this anniversary as the future for our products and services looks so bright. Demand for sustainable, renewable solutions continues to grow, and Doosan Babcock is at the forefront building new, dynamic markets for our services around the globe.
Our company’s origins trace back to our original joint venture, Babcock & Wilcox. George Herman Babcock and Stephen Wilcox formed Babcock & Wilcox after introducing a design for a steam boiler in 1867. A sales office opened in Glasgow in 1881, and within two years the firm was sourcing components from local contractors. Clydebank’s Singer Works began building complete boilers in 1885 and, thereafter, a new company was established in Britain on July 4th, 1891, to supply boilers outside the United States and Cuba. Babcock & Wilcox Limited launched a factory of its own at Renfrew, Scotland, in 1895, and in 1900 a start-up capital of £240,000 was raised to £1.57 million as we embarked on over a century of leadership in the global boiler markets, establishing operations in several other countries.
Since then Babcock has evolved and transformed in many ways. All these changes over the last 130 years came with great efforts, resulting in Babcock being recognised in the market as a professional company, which drives its business through knowledge, expertise, energy and focus on customer service driven by a sustainable approach.
To all our employees, customers, stakeholders, and partners – I thank you for your continued commitment to Babcock – you have made our company’s success possible. I am extremely proud of what we’ve achieved together. With a well-defined vision, combined with assurance and eagerness to grow, after 130 years of hard work we have remained just as ambitious as we started – however we have gained even more experience, strengthened our skills and our collaborations.
It gives me great confidence to know that we are all prepared to make this company stronger by finding solutions to the challenges of our industries and making sure that we overcome this global health crisis in good shape.
Happy 130 years of Babcock! Here’s to many more fantastic years.
Stay safe and I hope to see you soon again.
