Redcar & Cleveland College is helping to meet the skills needs of current and future developments across the Tees Valley with the addition of a new confined spaces rig.

The bespoke facility will open up further training opportunities for those looking to equip new and current workers with confined space awareness and working at heights training.

With a focus on helping to plug the region’s skills gaps, the College’s Head of Commercial Development Graeme Wood said:

“These are core abilities that are required in many industries including construction, engineering, mining as well as the wind energy and renewables sectors.”

Investment in the bespoke facility is the latest step in Redcar & Cleveland College’s work to meet employers’ needs and provide further opportunities to upskill a local workforce.

Graeme said:

“We have recognised the current and future needs of developments happening here in the Tees Valley. Demand for confined spaces and working at heights training is only expected to grow with the up and coming projects on their way to Teesside and the North-east.

“By providing accessible training opportunities here in Redcar and Cleveland we aim to help to tackle those skills gap before they occur.”

Built to ECITB specification, the new training rig is designed to support industry needs.

“Many roles involve working in extremely confined space often with limited light, this can make the work much more demanding and be a cause of further stress,” said Graeme.

“Working in these conditions demands remaining calm, working safely, collaboratively and communication is key – all core elements of the training.”
