Macy Butler completed two weeks at Northern Engineering Solutions as part of the Research Placements and Experiences Programme, previously known as the Nuffield Research Placements Programme. Organised and coordinated by the North East STEM Hub, delivered by RTC North, the programme gives year 12 students a practical understanding of careers and invaluable work experience.
The 17-year-old worked alongside Pedro Fernandez, the engineering firm’s Scientist, to learn more about the role of bioprocessing in treating waste products such as industrial effluent. She had the opportunity to work directly within the in-house research lab, gathering and analysing data.
Speaking about her time with Northern Engineering Solutions, she said: “I have had a fantastic two weeks here. Along with being taught the relevant theory, I was able to participate in a variety of exciting hands-on practicals, and have learned a vast amount about different techniques, sterilising methods and safety precautions. I have also gained an understanding as to what the other workers’ roles here entail, and overall I am very grateful to have spent my placement with such welcoming people.”
The St Thomas More student, who is studying Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, also prepared a research report and an academic poster on her findings. This will be displayed at a celebration evening for programme participants in mid-September.
Mark Davey, Director of Northern Engineering Solutions, added: “As a business, we want to inspire future generations to pursue careers in the field of engineering. Nuffield Research Placements offer an invaluable opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and practical scientific research.
“Macy excelled during her placement and demonstrated a real enthusiasm for the work we do at Northern Engineering Solutions. She has a bright future ahead of her, and we look forward to tracking her progress post-school.”
Based in North Shields, Northern Engineering specialises in mechanical, electrical, and process engineering (MEP), including effluent treatment solutions. The firm recently completed an innovation project with the Royal Air Force (RAF) to design a treatment system to recycle waste aircraft oils and lubricants.
