Is your company interested in opening children’s eyes to the world of opportunities in science and inspiring them to consider STEM careers? Do you want to develop meaningful links with local primary schools? Do you have a personal interest in developing your own skills within this vital area?

The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC) is running an ambassador training session and ongoing support for industrialists across the North East who are interested in sharing their enthusiasm for their job and company.

This training is offered by a CIEC advisory teacher, who works with teachers and children in their schools, and liaises with and trains company staff. The session will cover:

  • The impact of introducing scientists and engineers to the classroom
  • Working together to deliver your corporate responsibility focus on education, within a regional context
  • Understanding of the science national curriculum for 9 to 11 year olds
  • Choosing the appropriate language to communicate your science and your processes
  • Appreciating the kinds of science investigations children may do before working with you
  • Planning the ideal activities to support effective ambassador visits.

The cost of £1000 for up to 4 attendees from a company includes continued support following the training, to:

  • recruit schools for you to work with
  • advise on planning and implementation of appropriate activities
  • evaluation of your classroom sessions
  • promote your partnership with CIEC
  • DBS enhanced check for each member of staff involved.

Inviting a science ambassador into school can be just the catalyst needed to revitalise primary science. Working alongside a real scientist or engineer can maintain children’s curiosity, encourage questioning, inspire pupils and introduce them to the world of work outside of the classroom. With your help we can to inspire the next generation of STEM scientists to engage with the science on their doorstep!

Please note: This training session will support companies that are keen to get involved with the Children Challenging Industry programme but cannot offer the site visit experience.

Places will be allocated on a first come – first served basis. Please contact Nicky Waller at nicola.waller@york.ac.uk for more information.
