On Wednesday 13 February, businesses from across the Wilton complex welcomed 30 students from Newcastle University to help them explore the career opportunities that exist within an industrial manufacturing and research and development setting.

The students, who study science and engineering disciplines, are part of Newcastle University’s Careers Insights Award – a year long programme of employer led events and activities for students to gain work experience, explore opportunities and build networks with local and national employers. 

Facilitated by the NEPIC team, the group first toured the Wilton International complex, courtesy of host Sembcorp UK, where they witnessed first-hand large-scale manufacturing and sustainable power generation, as well as understanding the significant developments the site has seen over the decades and the major, new investments taking place.

Back at the Wilton Centre, the group met with SABIC UK Petrochemicals, Lynas Engineers, CPI, Calysta and TechConsult – who showcased their businesses and facilities and outlined the skills and attributes they are seeking in potential, future employees.

Director of Student Experience, Marc Lintern, Newcastle University said:

“Our Career Insights Award is a programme which aims to increase the career awareness and social mobility of our students. Events supported by North East employers are invaluable in helping our students understand what kind of opportunities exist as Newcastle University graduates. We are very grateful to all the employers who supported this Award and helped us to raise the aspirations of the students who participated.”

Zoe, a 1st year Biochemistry student, commented on her experience:

”Spending the day with NEPIC showed me another side of the technology industry that I could not have discovered without the outreach. It was interesting to learn how the Wilton Centre has changed over the course of its existence, such as becoming more sustainable and environmentally friendly with the demands of society and needing to protect our planet.”

Second year Biomedical Science student, Louise, said:

”Personally, I found the visit incredibly useful, as it has shown me there are other career paths I could take in the world of Biomedical Sciences. It has opened my eyes to commercial laboratory work, which before today I have never considered, and is something I will look into further. Throughout the day, staff were really friendly and welcoming, as well as happy to answer the questions I had about their companies, but also regarding my CV and future job applications.”
