In a frosty North East, last summers heatwave seems like lifetime ago. Yet, the impact of one of the hottest summers on record could be felt in a couple of months time as experts predict drought in spring 2019 with reservoir reserves currently at low levels.
Water companies, governing bodies and environmental experts warn that, unless there’s a higher than average amount of rainfall this winter, water restrictions could be put in place in the spring, causing problems for farmers, wildlife, the emergency services, and the environment.
While the Environment Agency and other organisations make plans to prevent water restrictions and drought, it is also the responsibility of businesses across the country to ensure that their water usage is minimised.
Andy Sinclair, Total Water Solutions, said: ‘Ensuring your business is proactive in reducing water usage will cut costs, as well as ensuring operations do not negatively impact the local environment or communities. Our specialists have prepared a guide on what businesses can do to take action and mitigate any risks to their operation.’
Leaks in your water infrastructure cause waste. By monitoring water usage around the clock, you can react quickly to any changes. Investing in Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) Technology allows businesses to accurately monitor and quickly detect leaks. Fixing any leaks and ensuring your system is well maintained will not only mean that water wastage is reduced, but water bills will be protected too.
Leaking faucets, faulty flush mechanisms or damaged machinery can all cause water to be used unnecessarily. A leaking toilet can use 215-500 litres per day costing between £100 — £230 per year. Checking all of your water appliances and fixing any faults can eliminate the risk of over-usage.
Older appliances can use more water than is necessary. Small, high impact changes such as installing tap aerators or toilets with water-efficient flushes can surprisingly make a considerable difference to your water usage. Newer appliances such as dishwashers or laundry appliances are designed to be water efficient, so replacing old appliances can make a huge difference to your water bill, as well as helping to reduce the risk of drought.
Reviewing your business’ water processes can highlight opportunities for improved efficiency. Simple changes such as limiting the time high water usage appliances are used will help.
For some businesses, implementing new water systems is the most effective way of reducing water usage. Greywater systems mean that water that does not need to be of drinkable quality (for example, water used in cooling systems or some manufacturing processes) can be treated on site and recycled, reducing your overall water usage.
Installing rainwater harvesting systems can reduce your dependence on the public water supply. Systems can be installed that catch the rainwater and treat it to make it suitable for use in greywater systems, or for purposes that do not require high standard potable water. Not only does harvesting rainwater reduce your water usage, but it will also reduce the amount of rainwater run-off from your property into the public sewer systems. This means your sewerage costs will be reduced.
With years of experience, our water saving experts can help you identify the most effective ways for your business to reduce its water usage and implement changes to your water system.
