We are thrilled and elated to feature in The Building Good Employer Guide 2018 and can’t quite believe we’ve managed to achieve a ‘hat-trick’ featuring in three guides in total so far (2015,2017,2018)! The Leadership Team is very proud that the hard work and commitment our people have shown in fostering a positive place to work, has been recognized by the judging panel for this years guide.
The criteria and requirements for the Good Employers Guide changed substantially this year, raising the expectations and the standards to a new level. Entrants were required to provide examples of initiatives that had made a positive impact for employees that go above and beyond the usual benefits offered. For each category entered actual results and evidence had to be provided as well as a minimum of three employee testimonials for each category.
“…we wanted this year’s entries to provide evidence of well thought-out and innovative programmes that have helped change the way people foster positive places to work. To that end, we created five categories and invited firms to explain how they are blazing a trail” (The Building Good Employer Guide, November 2018)
This year, Solomons entered not one, but two categories; Recruitment, Outreach and Inclusion as well as Connection and Communication – we felt we could provide fantastic examples for both categories, which demonstrated our commitment and passion for creating an open, supportive culture for our employees in which to grow and develop. With the standards so high, and the criteria this year being all the more challenging, we hoped for good news, but didn’t expect to have made the selection for both categories.
“This is a fantastic endorsement of the commitment and passion our Talent team and Directors have shown for the development of our people as individuals – supporting them to be the best they can be.
Everyone is open minded in their approach, listening and adapting to different needs, career paths and learning styles. But it’s not just the management team at the heard of this, it’s a whole team effort, with support coming from grass roots level as our teams mentor each other through buddy programmes and peer to peer groups, to help us as a team deliver top quality services on client projects and support targeted personal professional skills development. “
It’s an open culture which brings benefits to the business across the board:
“My colleagues have been supportive and friendly, offering unlimited assistance and backing throughout the process, contributing to my development considerably. The high-quality and diverse range of projects means that I have gained hands-on experience and skills, as well as wide-ranging knowledge about various elements of the job.”
“It quickly became apparent that the support network and personal mentoring at Solomons is excellent. Every member of the team is more than willing to share their knowledge, and their dedication to the profession is a constant source of inspiration. I am regularly set goals and objectives at regular review meetings, which ensures that I am progressing in the right direction.”
Our people matter a great deal to us and making sure we create supportive and inclusive environments and teams, that bring out the best in each of us has always been at the heart of what we do. This is Solomons 20th Year in business, and one of our passions has always been a willingness to innovate and adapt. 2019 is going to be a hive of activity for us and the many facets of our Pay It Forward campaign will really come into fruition, with the opening of our Papcastle Office planned for late Spring, the launch of our Team 15 initiative in January and our Wellbeing Festival planned for late spring!
“The concept of Team 15 is our second initiative this year, and has been devised to support our own high performing, ambitious Surveyors through the RICS APC Pathway to Final Assessment. Our Team 15 events will be focused on building both technical and professional skills to achieve Chartership and support structured career progression.” (Kerry Doig, Strategy Director)
Harnessing promising new talent from a more diverse pool and helping people to transfer the skills they already have to a rewarding career in Quantity Surveying will remain a focus for Solomons in the coming year. With the accomplishments of the first Accelerated Quantity Surveying Pathway, we have seen first-hand how successful conversion routes can be, both for the individual and organisation. Our next conversion pathway is in development and we are looking to engage with ex-military personnel, non cognate graduates, returners and the experienced unemployed to transfer their skills and talents to embrace the challenge of a new career in quantity surveying. Diversifying teams, instilling positive approaches to work life balance, and supporting each other to be the best we can be will remain a focus of 2019, with added momentum and exciting initiatives!
