Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd, a British company established over 130 years ago, are leaders in corrosion prevention and sealing technology with subsidiary companies located in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The renowned Denso products, a range of cold applied anti-corrosion and sealing tapes based on a synthetic fabric, impregnated and coated with a neutral petroleum compound, have been used for over 75 years and have a proven track record.
Denso systems are tailor made for individual anti-corrosion and sealing applications in a wide range of aggressive process environments with operating temperatures ranging from sub-zero to 220ºC. They are designed to protect cables, rods, valves and pipes and are resistant to mineral acids, alkalis, salts and micro-organisms. They are impermeable to water, vapour and gases and highly impervious to hardening and cracking.
For the production of Denso Tape, mixing tanks are filled with the petrolatum, which is maintained at a temperature of approximately 165ºC to avoid solidification, and applied to the synthetic fabric before being fed by rollers through a water quenching tank to the final cutting process.
The accurate and repeatable measurement of level within the tanks is critical to product quality and must also be robust and reliable to facilitate batch processing without costly interruptions. The air-firing radar gauge originally deployed to monitor the level gave problems from the outset, in the form of continuously false readings and Winn and Coales approached ABLE Instruments & Controls Ltd for a solution to the problem. ABLE subsequently specified one of their Drexelbrook “IntelliPoint” RF Admittance Point Switches, which was top mounted on the tank via an existing threaded entry.
Certain attributes of the IntelliPoint unit make it ideally suited to the application in question: it’s coating rejection capability negated the possibility of false trips and its remote electronics ensured immunity to the high process temperature and vibration. Furthermore, the fitting of a bespoke 10mm stainless steel disc to the probe tip provided a large surface area contact with the process, guaranteeing enhanced alarm point repeatability by way of an increased signal change. Consequently, Winn & Coales now enjoy precise, dependable level control of their Denso Tape manufacturing process.
