The scheme provides scaffolding firms with a comprehensive and practical 18-month programme of training combined with on-the-job experience, which culminates in a week-long end-point assessment. If apprentices pass the programme, they receive an industry recognised NVQ level 2 qualification in accessing and rigging for the scaffolding industry, as well as a COTS qualification, CISRS Part 1 and 2 Scaffolding certificate and CISRS Recognised Industry Scheme Card.
The apprenticeship programme is proving extremely popular with several North East firms using it to train new recruits.
JTL is one of the companies benefitting from 3t’s apprenticeship programme. A privately owned company based in Gateshead, JTL Scaffolding and sister company, JTL Projects have around 110 employees and work across the commercial, offshore, and industrial sectors.
Matthew Johnson, Engineering Manager at JTL Scaffolding explains why apprenticeships are important for the company: “We currently have one apprentice almost through his training with 3t and another about to start in January. We’re very passionate about investing in our workforce and apprenticeships are a key part of that. We are constantly looking for ways to improve and develop the learning outcomes for our apprentices.
“It’s well documented that the construction industry has a huge challenge around skills shortages and an ageing workforce and our approach is to employ fresh, new talent and put them alongside seasoned pros so that skills and knowledge can be passed on. Bringing the right people in with the right attitude and giving them the very best training and development from day one ensures our personnel are highly skilled, extremely loyal and have the right work-ethic.
“We’ve worked with 3t for several years now to train our personnel. The training facilities are fantastic, and the instructors have all been in the scaffolding industry themselves so are highly experienced.
“The training and apprenticeship programmes developed by 3t are undoubtedly helping the scaffolding industry combat skills shortages and delivering the highly skilled workforce of the future.”
Gayle McCann, Business Development Manager at 3t Training Services, said: “Our scaffolding apprenticeships develop young talent from grass roots level and shape them into skilled and competent workers industry needs. We put employers at the heart of every programme we develop and are listening to what they need: motivated, proactive, enthusiastic workers with the right skills to be productive from day one. Undoubtedly this answers industry’s need for new recruits with the right skills and attitude, at the same time as helping young people take those important first steps onto the career ladder.”
