TOPIC: Green Technology Development Trends

Chris will provide insights into several ‘hot’ areas of green innovation, including hydrogen; solar; batteries; carbon capture; bioplastics; and plastic recycling, as well as the emerging alternative protein food industry. Using the firm’s annual “Inside Green Innovation” report, Chris will help to shine a light on the state of progress in the development of key green technologies, and consider what it may mean for the North East.

TOPIC: Balancing Resource Efficiency and Climate Change

Graham will look at the role that resource efficiency has to play in the reduction of carbon emissions and limiting the impact of climate change. He will also discuss how new technology can only be a part of the solution for a more sustainable future and look at the impact we can have through better application of existing approaches.

TOPIC: Flue2Chem

The £5.4m Flue2Chem Project is a two-year programme spearheaded by Unilever and SCI, with 13 other organisations involved. With funding from Innovate UK, which has come via the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Transforming Foundation Industries Challenge, the partners aim to take waste gas from foundation industries such as metal and paper, and generate an alternative source of carbon for UK consumer products.

Neil has over 20 years’ experience in the chemical industry with ICI plc, Croda International, Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) and Applied Graphene Materials. Neil started with ICI in 1995 following completion of his DPhil and Bachelor of Arts at the University of Oxford. He is a Chartered Chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

TOPIC: Making Tees Valley a “Hydrogen Super-Place”

Hydrogen has the potential to be a significant contributor to the challenge of decarbonising energy intensive industries. In 2022, the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA), as part of it’s Net Zero Industrial Cluster Plan, commissioned Frazer-Nash Consultancy to undertake a study into the interventions required to make the Tees Valley a hydrogen “super-place”. This presentation will outline the background to the study, the methodology used, the conclusions of the work and TVCA’s preferred option for moving forward.

TOPIC: Introduction to X-Energy

The presentation will introduce the XE-100 reactor technology, the X-Energy and Cavendish Nuclear partnership and their intention for the first UK deployment on the existing Hartlepool NPP site. Stephen will discuss how they can not only generate clean electricity, but also supply high quality steam for process end users, which can contribute to the Tees Valley net zero ambitions.
