Launched in October 2020, the Tomorrow’s Engineers Code is a commitment to work toward common goals to increase the diversity and number of young people entering engineering careers.
To achieve these goals, Signatories make four pledges about their approach to funding, designing, delivering, and learning from engineering-inspiration activities (including STEM programmes dedicated to inspiring young people into engineering).
Signatories form the Code Community which is made up of engineering firms, professional institutions, government departments, subject associations, universities, museums, third sector organisations and more.
Any organisation with UK operations that funds, designs and/or delivers engineering-inspiration activities is invited to become a Signatory. It’s free to become a member of this community and any organisation not meeting the criteria above, can join as a Supporter.
The purpose is to:-
Share and build understanding of what works
Improve the quality, inclusivity, targeting and reach of activities designed to inspire young people
Engineering is a varied, stimulating and valuable career and industry needs to work harder than ever to ensure that it is accessible for this generation of young people – for their own life chances and so that we have a diverse and insightful workforce that enables the UK to thrive.
The collective impact of work across the sector needs to grow to help young people understand what engineering is, how to get into it, and be motivated and able to access the educational and training opportunities on the way.
Many organisations are already doing important work but together, via The Code, industry can deliver a joined-up approach to drive change at scale.
From an idea at a Year of Engineering roundtable to a Code shaped by more than 100 organisations and individuals, there is now have a framework of four pledges:
Ensuring programmes contribute to a sustained and rich STEM journey for all young people
Ensuring all young people have opportunities to engage in engineering-inspiration activities, so that no one is left behind
Promoting a positive, compelling and authentic view of engineering, and showcasing the breadth of opportunities
Improving the monitoring and evaluation of programmes and activities to develop a shared understanding of what works
The Code provides a robust approach to increasing the collective impact and the return on investment in engineering engagement. It will enable organisations to improve the impact of individual initiatives through collaboration with other Signatories.
Signatories will have access to support that will empower them to meet the pledge areas including evidence-based summaries of what works, case studies, and ideas for improvement.
Over the coming months, we will be working closely with the Code Community to build out the support available to Signatories. For more details please visit the Engineering UK website – Get involved page
