Read more >Hot work is routine within the Chemical Industry but continues to be one of the biggest causes of work fatalities and serious injuries.
In addition a fire or explosion normallly results in major plant damage and environmental impact. OEE / up time typically takes a massive hit and in the odd case the plant is never restarted..
Safety Contacts or Safety Pauses use learning from previous incidents and are aimed at generating discussion on whether something similar could happen here?
In Hot Work Part 2 we are looking at gas testing.
The majority of the 100 sites that we have visited over the years do carry out gas tests before issuing Hot work / Confined Space entry certificates.
However, around 30% were not bump testing the equipment before use. Anaylsis by Industrial Scientific over a 7 year period showed that, on average, 1 in every 2,500 untested instruments will fail to respond to a dangerous concentration of gas.
Before use bump tests are a vital part of ensuring hot work activities dont kill ! {Click on link below then click on the Hot Work Part 2 text to access the Safety Contact}
Earlier on in Hot Work Part 1 we looked at the importance of competent people [with knowledge / experience of the process; the chemical and work activity hazards] carrying out a full risk assessment. We also suggested that hot work should be a last resort not routine on live plant.
We have over 30 years of expereince on safe systems of work, including hot work.
