The company, which is set to produce up to a million units of sanitiser a month, started up at the weekend, well within its 10-day target.
Three shifts are currently being run around the clock at the Newton Aycliffe plant.
The company said it is focusing on meeting the needs of frontline medical and care services as well as making “pocket bottle” hand sanitisers for personal use.
These will be produced to World Health Organisation specifications.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, founder and chairman of Ineos, said:
“Now that production of the Ineos hand sanitiser has started, we are working on the fastest way to get them to where they need to be.
“I am confident that within a few days our sanitiser will start to be seen in hospitals, surgeries and people’s homes.”
The sanitiser will be provided free to hospitals and says it wants to “concentrate on meeting the needs of front line medical and care services as well as making the ‘pocket bottle’ hand sanitisers for personal use for people across the UK and Europe.
Ineos – which also has a base at Seal Sands – will also supply hospitals, schools, places of work, pharmacies and supermarkets in the fight to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.
