Industrial and Marine Hydraulics (IMH) continues to demonstrate its commitment to developing the next generation of hydraulic engineers with the appointment of two new apprentice trainees at its head office on Teesside.

Luke Morris (pipefitter) and Hugo Abrol (mechanical fitter) have joined IMH’s four-year apprenticeship programme.

Headquartered in Middlesbrough, UK IMH is a global player in hydraulic engineering, with experience of working across more than 50 countries. It delivers major hydraulic engineering projects and offers services across design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, maintenance and repairs, as well as component supplies and training.

Founded by Paul Griffiths MBE, IMH has grown from a home-based business in 1983 to a leading global player in hydraulic engineering.

The company is nurturing hydraulic engineering talent on Teesside through its investment in a long-running apprenticeship programme and commitment to skills development among young people.

Through IMH’s four-year apprenticeship programme, Luke and Hugo will gain practical skills in pipefitting, fabrication, welding and hydraulic engineering as well as working towards a recognised NVQ Level 3.

Luke Morris, Trainee Pipefitter at IMH commented: “I’m delighted to have this opportunity with IMH as I’ve wanted to be a pipefitter for a while and realised it was the job for me after completing a one-week placement with the company a year ago.

“The people here are really encouraging and supportive, and they have a real passion for engineering and manufacturing, which is exciting. Working here also gives me the opportunity to travel to new places.”

Hugo Abrol, Trainee Mechanical / Hydraulic Engineer at IMH added: “I’m delighted to be part of the IMH apprenticeship programme as I’m able to work and learn at the same time.

“I love seeing how something works – taking it apart and putting it back together again, or if it’s broken then trying to fix it. The programme with IMH gives me the opportunity to get practical hands-on-experience in the company’s training lab, and also working with parts, pumps and valves.

“My dad works with wind turbines, so I’ve always grown up knowing that mechanical engineering is a good route to go down and I am looking forward to starting my career with IMH.”

James Griffiths, General Manager at IMH said: “I’m delighted to welcome Luke and Hugo to our apprenticeship programme. Having gone through the programme here myself I know the opportunities it provides and the skills you will acquire during the training.

“IMH established the apprenticeship programme in 1995 to deliver the company’s philosophy of training home grown talent to compete on a world stage – to deliver hydraulic engineering products and services across the globe, and it’s fantastic that almost 25 years on we’re still able to achieve this.

“Luke and Hugo have fitted in so well with the team and are showing great enthusiasm in learning and applying their skills. I am looking forward to seeing them grow and develop throughout the next four years.”

As well as following a hands on training programme through a local technical college, the apprentices also receive bespoke engineering training at IMH provided by a dedicated and experienced hydraulic professional.

IMH has extensive experience of providing hydraulic engineering expertise and solutions to sectors including, infrastructure, marine, nuclear, renewables, oil and gas and subsea. Its work includes major flood defence barrier upgrades, refurbishment programmes for jetty loading arms and major equipment overhauls, including pipework and HPU renewals.
